Economic Development:

Councillor Hugh Pratt

The economic development program is funded through the TATC, which receives its funding from INAC.

The program normally makes grants available to individual community members based on application for business ventures. Unfortunately, the current cash flow situation has put these grants on hold and funds will not be released until further notice.

The Chief  & Council, through GGFN Holdings Inc, has signed several memorandums of understanding, teaming agreements and joint venture agreements with industry partners at a signing ceremony held at the 3rd Annual GGN Pow Wow. By entering into agreements with these business partners we hope to take advantage of job training, skills development and employment opportunities as well as profit sharing. Many of these agreements developed due to the construction of the Jansen Lake potash mine by BHP Billiton.

The Economic Development Program is developing business plans for several stand alone businesses. A business plan is currently being created for an aggregate business (gravel) as well as for a cow/calf operation.

Ec Dev is also part of the land acquisition team in partnership with GGFN TLE. This team has been instructed to make strategic land purchases, create a taxation by-law and develop a land use code. The goal is to ensure that any lands purchase generate revenue and profit for the band.

The Economic Development portfolio is also part of the newly created Training & Employment portfolio. This portfolio was created to ensure that our members were job ready when new opportunities arise.  We will work in partnership with other GGFN departments, such as Education and Active Measures to ensure that community members who want to work have opportunities for training and employment.
