Public Works & Housing:

Councillor John McNabb

The GGFN Public Works is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Landfill/Sanitation department, Fire Protection, Roads, Community Buildings, Electrical and School Grounds. We receive funding through INAC for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of these programs.

Water Maintenance:

The Water Treatment Plant recently completed the expansion to improve the quality and quantity of our treated water. The quality of our water is among the best here in Saskatchewan, and is a huge accomplishment to be proud of. The treatment and constant testing of the water is very important in keeping up with new technology and health standards. The water is tested on a daily basis.

The Water Treatment Plant is a very important section within the Public Works Department. The health and safety of the public is a huge concern for Public Works staff, and a large portion of our funding is put toward the best materials to test our water.

Our waste water program includes sewage hauling, repairs to equipment and machinery as well as replacing old equipment. Public Works currently hauls sewage from the store, restaurant and some homes. This year was very busy due to the constant rain and bad weather. We have replaced a number of sewer pumps in various homes and have been dealing with flooding in basements and crawl spaces.

Landfill/Sanitation

The main service provided by this department is garbage pick up. We begin garbage pick up on Monday morning, and are typically finished by Wednesday afternoon. The building are done first and the residences are done after pick up at the public building is complete. Please note that any garbage not bagged or placed in a garbage box will not be picked up due to the safety and protection of our staff.

Road Maintenance

The services provided by this department include: maintenance such as grading, patching, pothole repair, ditch cutting, culvert installation and snow removal. It is important to understand that the weather plays a huge role in how this department schedules its service delivery each year.

This year we are in the process of an Aggregate Project to make our own gravel. GGFN has a rich source of gravel and we can save significant funds if we make  it ourselves. With the help of the GGFN TLE department, we have the funds to better our roads and to produce enough gravel to cover our needs for the next 2 years.

Given the heavy amount of traffic and the poor weather this year, our road is in need of significant amounts of gravel and some areas require resurfacing. We will be hauling in the last week of September to the main roads, and roads with high traffic will be a priority. In October we will begin hauling to homes, so please be advised that vehicles may have to be moved. We will keep the community updated and provide notices when we are working in your area.

Community Buildings

Public works is responsible for the maintenance of the Band Office, Arena, GG Education Center, Old School Block, Water Treatment Plant, Equipment Storage, Restaurant and Prefab Area.

This year, the Old Gym will continue to be used for bingos, workshops, funeral and other public events.

The GGEC school is our biggest asset for building on reserve. It has its own budget for operations and maintenance each year and, because of its size, it is very expensive to operate ad maintain and must be closely monitored. The School grounds are constantly maintained in response to changes in weather.

The GGEC will continue to host larger public events such as Treaty Days, General Assemblies, and other large scale public gatherings.
