Councillor Bonny Gordon

Veterans

As always, the GGFN Veterans are very active in their association and in their community.

We are very pleased and proud to announce that Veteran Arthur Anderson has been chosen to receive the FSIN’s Circle of Honour Citizen of the Year Award.  This prestigious award is granted by the FSIN’s Indian Government Commission, and is based upon extraordinary service to First Nations people. The awards banquet will be held in Regina on September 13.

Congratulations, Arthur!

Both Wilfred and Arthur Anderson represented Gordon First Nation at the Bold Eagle Graduation, held on August 19, in Wainwright, Alberta.  We also had an excellent turn out of Veterans at our annual pow wow, and the pow wow committee set up a Veterans’ tent where they were provided with food, beverages and a place to rest.

The GGFN Chief and Council would like to remind our community members that we will be unveiling the GGFN Veterans’ Cairn on November 11 as part of our Remembrance Day ceremonies. We hope to see many of our community members come out and help us honour our Veterans, past and present.

Social Development

GGFN is in the process of developing a Social Development Committee to help guide our programming. Interested community members are asked to contact Bonny Gordon. We are currently developing a Terms of Reference for the Committee that outlines its roles and responsibilities. Once the Terms are complete, we will post a call for interested members in the community and on our website.

In late August, Carlton Trail provided aptitude testing for our membership. An orientation was held on September 9, and classes began on September 13. Approximately 20 GGFN members will attend this training.

National Child Benefit Reinvestment Program (NCBR)

The NCBR program has been in affect since 1998 and, to date, continues to assist our First Nation in 5 main areas:

· Child Nutrition

· Child Care

· Home to Work Transitions

· Support for Parent

· Cultural Enrichment

The NCBR program falls within the Social Development portfolio and is for on-reserve members only.

This year, the NCBR program will be providing a number of programs:

· Life Skills Training (18-25 yr olds)

· Driver Training

· First Aid/CPR

· Employment Training/Assistance

· Safe Food Handling/WIMIS

· Unity of Nations Conference

Anyone with any comments, concerns or questions is encouraged to contact the Program Manager, Lorretta Hunter.  Social Development clerk is Charity Bitternose.

NCBR would like to extend a big than you to all individuals who have contributed their time, effort and ideas to make our programs a success over the past year.
