Councillor Dennis Bird
Health GGFN health programs are aimed at prevention of poor health and the
promotion of healthy lifestyles. Most of our funding is designated for
prevention and promotion and is program specific. The funding formula for
health programs is based on the on-reserve population and is specifically
targeted for the on-reserve membership. GGFN health runs a number of programs for our on-reserve members. Among
our programs are: ·
prenatal session, held the 2nd Thursday of each month. September’s
session will focus on FASD. · Child
Health Clinics (Immunization), held every Tuesday unless otherwise posted;
and · Foot
Care, held the last Tuesday of each moth. Foot Care is available as
necessary and special appointments can be made through the Home &
Community Care nurse. We are also running a series of Diabetic care clinics, including an
informational session that was held on September 16. This session was
follow up to our Kidney screening session held last March. Anyone wishing further information on health care is invited to call the GGFN medical clinic at 835-2020.
Brighter Futures The Brighter Futures program’s objectives are to increase awareness in
the Mental Health and Child Development/Parenting Skills areas.
Programming includes: · Sponsoring
mental health community workshops · Hosting
the Unity of Nations conference for students · Assisting
other programs with funding to host workshops · Providing
sponsorships for recreation/sports fees not covered through minor sports · Promoting
injury prevention · Hosting
community events such as the Halloween Bash and Valentine Round Dance, and · Horse
back riding lessons. Effectively immediately, Brighter Futures will cover either registration
fees or expenses for workshops and conferences, but not both. This year, we will focus on the development of a GGFN Youth Centre. Our
youth worker, along with the Brighter Futures Coordinator, will seek out
and evaluate ideas for the development of a fully functional center.
Fundraising will play a large role in carrying out these activities, and
we encourage community members to participate as much as possible. The
Youth Centre also welcomes parent to either visit our volunteer their
time, especially if they have ideas they would like to see implemented at
the youth centre.
