Justice, Employment & Training:

Councillor Dennis Hunter

Employment and Training

Current training has begun and the class began on September 9 in the Arena lobby. This year, we had more applicants than seats in the class, so interest was very high.

Our industry partnerships may also afford training opportunities for our members. We are currently waiting for our industry partners to send us their detailed training packages that will list various opportunities and qualifications.

In the effort to be both inclusive and to gather as much knowledge and expertise as we can, we are putting together a training team from the following areas: TATC, GGFN Education, NCBR, Income Support, Post Secondary, SITAG and the portfolio councilor. This committee’s responsibilities will be detailed in a terms of reference, and is designed to bring together all the members of our community, and beyond, who can assist in finding and funding training opportunities in our community. This committee will also likely serve as the Active Measures Committee.

GGFN is looking for funding to recruit and hire an Employment & Training Officer who will assist with clients, committee meetings, etc. We hope to have funding for this position this year.

Justice

The Justice portfolio is in the process of hiring a Justice Worker for our community. Interviews will be held in early September, and more details will be available in our next newsletter. Further, we are establishing the GGFN Justice Committee, which should be fully functional later this fall. We have had some interested members of our community already come forward, and we are working on our Terms of Reference.

Prairie Lodge Housing Corp.

The Prairie Lodge Urban Housing is presently being brought under the umbrella of Silver Sage Housing.  Part of the reason for this is that we have had little success in getting a quorum for our committee meetings. This work should be complete by the next quarter, and we hope to have a fuller report and smoother operations in this important area by the next newsletter in January, 2011.
