Health Focus:

 

*  Gordon Health Programs are aimed at Prevention and Promotion .

 

*  Most population of our health funding is designated for prevention and promotion and is very program specific, this means that there is very little room to manoeuvre outside the program guidelines.

 

*  Funding formula for all Health Canada programs and INAC is based on on-reserve population and is targeted specifically for the on-reserve.

Prevention and Promotions:

Community Health Nurses provide services such as:

    > Immunizations to babies, school age children, and yearly flu shots

    > Health teachings to prenatals, new moms, children in school and the general public upon request

    > Liaise with other First Nations & Inuit Health Branch programs, Environmental Health, Health Information Systems

    > Contribute to knowledge base of the Gordon Health Team

 

Community Health Representatives:

    > Work with all ages from birth to seniors

    > Host workshops on various health issues such as diabetes, menopause, parenting, HIV/AIDS, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

    > Work with the school doing skin and head checks

    > Do home visits with seniors and new moms

    > Assist the CHN’s with immunization clinics

 

Brighter Futures Program:

    > Increase awareness in mental health, child development, healthy babies, injury prevention and parenting skills

    > Improve the knowledge and skills of front line health workers and community members

    > Improve the health of children by facilitating the prevention of and early intervention on health problems and by promoting better integration of health services

    > Assist parents and professionals with information on the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively contribute to the improved health and development of children

    > Support community development and provide opportunity for Gordon First Nation community to find their own solutions to the health and developmental needs of children, youth, family and community

 

NNADAP:

    > Develop and implement coordinated programs that focus on prevention through increased community knowledge and effective interventions for people who seek assistance with their addictions and mental health issues.  This specifically includes the need to re-examine the requirement for on-reserve mental health coordination to address emerging crisis, such as suicide attempts.

    > Recognizing the importance of home and community, increase community involvement by parents and elders in guiding and actively engaged in assisting young people choosing not to engage in the use of addictive substances.

    > Provides counselling and hosts regular A.A. Meetings

 

Home & Community Care Program:

    > Home & Community Care is a program designed to help families maintain independent living for the home care client

    > The program assists clients with in home care and access to services or new information

    > The Home Care nurse completes assessments at the request of individuals or family members

    > The success of this program for an individual depends on the individual’s compliance and the families’ support

    > Home Care does not take the place of the family

 

 

Tid Bits from Health:

 

l      Priority Health Needs  from the Health Needs Assessment are:

> Improved diabetes treatment and prevention activities

>  Better access to Health Care Services

>  More appropriate lifestyle choices

>  More effective delivery of Preventative Health and Health Education

l      September 2007 moved from a contribution agreement with Health Canada to a Set Transitional Agreement

l      We will be doing another health needs assessment within the next year...the last one was completed in 2002 and we have met the needs that the community indicated ie. Medical van, diabetes educators, increased workshops and health screenings

l      On going projects include;
